‘Is WordPress a Blog or a Social Network Site?'

WordPress (2020) has become the 'go to' and user-friendly interface for websites, e-commerce sites and many blogs and landing pages for personal and business use today. When people today set out to build a website, one of the first mentions is usually WordPress. It is a very easy to use website designer with beautiful themes and easy to navigate menus.

But did WordPress begin as a website builder? According to the homepage of the WordPress site, they have built a staggering "36% of the websites" (ibid) on the internet today.

While WordPress's fame is through being a website customer relationship management system, the truth is in 2003 (WPBeginner 2019) WordPress began as a blog site. WordPress then very quickly over the past fifteen years has developed into a multi use internet tool.

What is Social Media

But what does WordPress have to do with social media? To break down what social media actually is, is best explained as using "websites and applications"(The Balance Small Business 2019) to communicate and send information to other users instantly. Social Media is based on being able to communicate words, photos, video and all sorts of different media instantly. According to the Pew Research Center (2019), the most popular platform is Facebook with YouTube and Instagram not far behind. But what is interesting, is all of these popular social media sites are based on web built applications, not built on WordPress.

I suggest that WordPress is one of the best facilitators of social media, in that it points users to social media, and social media in turn points users back to websites, usually based in WordPress. WordPress isn't based as a social network site, but rather a blogging site. Its foundation lies in blogging, but it has become rather a part of an essential base for all blogging sites and websites, being a pioneer for other applications and web programs. As more and more plugins and applications have become WordPress compatible, the ability for WordPress to surpass other programs has leaped.

Matt Wullenberg, creator of WordPress shares below about the exponential growth of WordPress and how as an open source program is really instrumental in connecting all applications through the one platform. (CBInsights 2018).

So in conclusion, WordPress's foundations lie in a blogging site, but I don't believe it is a social network site in and of itself, but rather an excellent facilitator of social media and networks. WordPress captures all of the creative ideas in one locational platform. It gives the user the ability to streamline all of their social media platforms and also hold all the information and e-shops in the one location.
